Intel 公布下一代 Thunderbolt 的最新規格，新一代的 Thunderbolt 5 將會為 2023 年或以後推出的 Mac 提供超快資料傳輸速度，以及改善對外部顯示器的支援。Thunderbolt 5 配備 80Gbps 雙向頻寬，傳輸速度較 Thunderbolt 4 的快 2 倍，更多細節有待 Intel 明年公布。
現時最新的 14 吋及 16 吋 MacBook Pro 配備 Thunderbolt 4/USB4 插口，每邊的頻寬高達 40Gbps，但最多只能支援 2 至 3 部外部顯示器，最高頻率為 6K@60Hz。
而新一代的 Thunderbolt 5 配備 80Gbps 雙向頻寬，令未來的 Mac 及支援該標準的外部儲存裝置資料傳輸速度較現時的 Thunderbolt 4 快 2 倍，甚至能為外部顯示器提供高達 120Gbps 的頻寬，讓 Mac 能支援 60Hz 的雙 8K 顯示器。
Thunderbolt 5 是基於 USB4 2.0 及 DisplayPort 2.1 規格設計，並兼容前一代的 Thunderbolt、USB 及 DisplayPort。Intel 預計將在 2023 年公布 Thunderbolt 5 的正式名稱、特徵及功能等更多細節。
