20 年前的今天，第一個 SMS (Short Message Service) 正式出現，至今已成為了手機的基本功能。上年共有約 8 兆個 SMS 送出，為電訊商帶來了過千億美元收入。
1992 年 12 月 3 日，當時的 Sema Group 軟件工程部 Neil Papworth 傳送了 “Merry Christmas” 給予 Vodafaone 工作的朋友 Richard Jarvis，成為了全球第一個 SMS 訊息。當時手機並沒有鍵盤功能，Papworth 利用電腦輸入再將訊息傳送到手機傳送開去，令手機談話也可以經由文字去取代。由於 SMS 的長度有限，令不少英文字需要精簡以節省空間，造就了 LOL、ROFL 等英文字句更多人認識，不知道大家又是否有經常使用呢？雖然 Whatsapp、LINE 等早已取代了 SMS 成為另類文字傳送工具，但 SMS 還有其獨特之處，不需要帳戶也不用數據計劃，相短期內仍難以被取代。
